How big does a sound system need to be?

For a typical ‘hole in the wall’ inner city café that seats 10 people inside, with a few standing waiting for take-away, then a single speaker system is ideal. This would cover approximately 30 sq metres. If there was outdoor seating and you did want to cover that too then a small outdoor speaker would be needed.

If your café size is say a 30-50 seating capacity a two to four speaker system would be more than adequeate. For a much larger venue you would need to look at multiple speakers in a zoning set-up, this way different areas of the premises can have different volume levels.

The best place to install speakers in your cafe?

When mounting speakers, generally avoid corners as this can make the sound very boomy. Ideally speakers should be mounted up high out of the way and it also means the top end remains clear and not muffled….so under a table is NOT a good idea

A shelf to have the player on somewhere accessible but away from steam and moisture is best. If the player can fit neatly in a cupboard with power inside, and cabling leading out to speakers, that’s great as it keeps it protected too.

QSC – K Series

Many speaker are self powered now with an amp built in so you can literally plug a cd player or ipod straight in the back. They often have a microphone input as well, so if you decide to have a performer or function that’s covered too.
We recommend and retail K-Series speakers by QSC . Because K-Series reproduces with clear, clean articulation it cuts throught the noise floor – it doesn’t add to it. Contact us for more details and a quote, we can offer  our Sounds Like Cafe customers a 10% discount on retail price..
