The Sheyana Band – Feature Album Big Love

"The Sheyana Band – Feature Album Big Love"

A fine album of easy listening blues rock that harkens back to the greats of the 70’s as well as maintaining a modern flavour.

Having just played Party In The Paddock the band are set for big things. The Sheyana Band are a collective of rock-solid rhythms, impassioned vocals and tightly packaged toe-tapping grooves steeped in blues and storytelling.

THE MEZCALTONES – Newest album Second

"THE MEZCALTONES – Newest album Second"

THE MEZCALTONES

Favourites at Tamworth and other Festivals we are proud to have this great new album to send to cafes.

It’s more than a band, its a show… With ATTITUDE!

THE MEZCALTONES are inspired by cool tunes from Tito and Tarantula, Dick Dale, Link Wray, Los Lobos, Santana and other artists from this genre. The attitude of those famous Tarantino/ Robert Rodrigues flicks, Cowboy movies and B grade low budget 1960’s teen movies.

Mezcaltones promo 2018 copy

Featuring a Tex Mex, 60’s, cowboy rockabilly surf guitar style of twang and incorporating Mimi’s spellbinding dance moves, they are hard to pigeonhole. They have performed at the Sydney Winterfest BLUES festival, four Tamworth COUNTRY music festivals and the Sydney BLUES & ROOTS festival. Their debut CD was voted #6 in the Top Ten CDs of 2016 by 100% ROCK magazine. They have been described by some as Mexican Hillbilly surf music, Alt country, Cowboy Blues Brothers, cowpunk, Surferbilly and more… one thing everyone does agree upon is THE MEZCALTONES are highly entertaining!

Yhan Leal – New Self titled Album

"Yhan Leal – New Self titled Album"

Soundslikecafe is proud to feature this fine album from the beautiful Seven Rivers area of Northern NSW

It’s been two fertile years for Yhan Leal since he released his last recording. Quietly determined, Leal has come from busking nightly outside Bellingen’s local supermarket, to developing a career as a bona fide touring and recording artist.

Leal’s new album, the eponymous Yhan Leal, was recorded between Leal’s home in Bellingen and in various Sydney studios with Producer Ryan Miller. The new full length album contains all the ethereal dreaminess, melodic guitars and haunting harmonies that are the halmark of Yhan’s hypnotic style, but also takes a new direction with the augmentation of a full band and production on several tracks. Themes of love, loss and grief, travel, peace and freedom, are explored with a maturity and honesty, that has developed with Leal’s own journey of genuine musical evolution.

Hussy Hicks & Raphael White – On The Boundaries

"Hussy Hicks & Raphael White – On The Boundaries"
With their new single Mutiny recently Premiered with repeat plays on Triple J Roots N All the Hussy Hicks are well pleased with their collaborative efforts on the new album. Teaming up with long time friend London based Producer Raphael White the girls have created a stunning new album that will surprise some but still maintains their folk and blues roots. They are currently on tour in the USA and head home next month to drop the record and head out for their Australian dates.(listed below)
For this album they joined forces with long time friend and musical collaborator Raphael White. Their trust in him as a producer allowed them to expand on their live sound and conduct some sonic experiments in his London studio. “Stylistically I guess the biggest difference between this and our last albums would be the layering; more vocals, more guitars, more time spent on production” says Julz. ““We tried not to be beholden to our live sound, to keep the tracks open to be able to grow in any direction. The way we found was best for that was to start each song by Leesa laying down a couple of shaker tracks (as we do live) so that we all had a solid foundation groove that we were all comfortable to build upon. We then sang and played all the different ideas we had for each song and left Raph with a bit of a sonic smorgasboard to play with.
It’s not a folk album, its not a blues album, its not an alt-country album but it still has bits of all our influences
wrapped up in there and we’re super happy with the result.”
The Hussy Hicks are also pleased to announce their upcoming Tour

Carol Albert – Fly Away Butterfly

"Carol Albert – Fly Away Butterfly"

Every so often, an artist comes along that makes you reimagine the possibilities of music. With Fly Away Butterfly, Carol Albert delivers a seminal and sizzling contribution to the artistic sphere, blending lively melodies with thoughtful and refined arrangements. But this album is also one of healing, as Carol lost her husband in 2014, and she turned back to composing musicafter some years away from her recording career. Throughout the opus, we hear, quite beautifully, about Carol’s stages of recovery and healing. And by so doing, she has given us something for each one of us to hold onto.

The title track “Fly Away Butterfly” evokes an ambient groove enlivened by joyful, even mirthful utes, the soundtrack to a butter fly flying away, from this place to that. Indeed, the track is symbolic, as Carol’s voice is intimate and distant, the delicate balance of love and loss that we all must face during life. “Awakening” flows and builds with an ostinato groove, lilting notes, and well-placed piano touches. The song is wrought with anticipation and playful exchanges that resolve to the tonic chord, a brilliant display of compositional prowess and acumen. “On My Way” is even more explicit, an anthem for our times. It’s a song of new beginnings. Her lyrics “on my way to a better day – I’ll spread my wings and y away…” connote not just escapism but realism. “Across the Sky” begins with a Coltrane-like incandescent solo with dreamy, even distant vocals.

All in All a superb album you’ll enjoy over and over again….

A chat with Dorina Morelli as she releases new album Make Believe

"A chat with Dorina Morelli as she releases new album Make Believe"

Dorina has her new Album Make Believe just out and we had a chat to her about how she became a singer / writer and her thoughts on influences and current artists – Spoiler – Cat Story Below……

Tell us about the moment you decided to become a singer? What did your family have to say about it?

I’ve been singing and dancing since I was 4 years old. Music was all I ever wanted to do. It was in the blood as my father played piano accordion in bands. I trained and performed to perfect my craft until I finally landed a gig that changed my life at age 21. My family could not understand my drive to become as singer and did not exactly encourage me but I did it anyway, and then they became my biggest fans.

What inspired you to become and artist and who are your early influences?

Early influences were obviously ABBA as a child. I had the pillow and socks! I also grew up with the Young Talent Time, and wanted nothing more than to be on that show. I got close as I attended their school. As a teenager I started to appreciate a great variety of singer songwriters from Rickie Lee Jones to Karen Carpenter, Sara Vaughan.

Tell us a little about your writing process, how does a song come along? What gets you going creatively?

I get so easily inspired to write when I hear a piece of music that stirs something in me, I cannot help but burst into song with a melody that I feel fits. Throw some matching lyrics in it and suddenly there is a song. On the other hand, words come to me from my own current situation as a form of expression. Then I’ll hear a tune in my head and bring to a great musician to flesh out the chords.

What current Australian acts inspire you and why? What international acts?

Locally, I’m a big fan of Meg Mac. I love her style and sentiment and expression. A great talent that I hope goes a long way. Internationally, I cannot go past Sheryl Crow. From her humble beginnings as a backing vocalist for Michael Jackson to becoming a prolific songwriter and not afraid to speak out, she is a true artist with amazing talent.

Tell us a little about your music and what a crowd can expect at a live show?

My music is basically feel-good music. As I age, I tend to write songs with uplifting and inspiring messages and I make my live shows much the same. Being a veteran on stage, I can sing anywhere, anytime without fear and give it my all. I love involving the audience to ensure that everybody has a good time. I also love to laugh so I make sure it’s fun for all.

Fave film? Fave Book? Fave place? Fave animal or pet?. And story if there is one

Film: Cinema Paradiso

Book: Anything by Dr. John Demartini

Place: Italy

Pet: Spooky (my cat) -Photo by Ron Lamoureux

2009_Spooky_Photo_by_RonLamoureuxSpooky is Canadian; I brought her back with me when I moved back home after 6 years in Winnipeg. Spooky is very relaxed and likes to travel. I built a little case for her to sit on the back of my bike so that she could come with me to work. People often stared and pointed in amazement with huge smiles on their faces. It was a sight to see. She would also follow me to work when I walked and again passer-by’s were amazed. But then it would take an hour of searching to get her to come home as she didn’t like the place I was living, especially the unruly dog!

What is the one thing you want/need that you think will make you a successful artist? Why?

I want and need YouTube subscribers and likes and people to listen and buy my music and visit my site and come to my shows and book me for house-gigs. I just want to get out there more and fully be who I was meant to be on this earth and entertain as only I know how. I want and need love from all of you!

What are your future plans for 2017/2018?

Future plans for the forthcoming year is to become a full time musician again. To record my next album, release it to a growing fan base, keep touring and doing what I love. I spent too long away from music and now I want embrace it all again totally! I hope you help me to do that and through the process I inspire you to do something you love! Thank you!
