Fiona Joy — Signature – Synchronicity

"Fiona Joy — Signature – Synchronicity"

Signature – Synchronicity is the perfect bookend to Fiona Joy’s 2015 project Signature-Solo, which spent several months in the coveted #1 spot on the ZMR Airplay Charts and released in numerous formats via Blue Coast Records, a pioneering audiophile label.

World-class musical luminaries give Signature – Sychronicity a powerful grounding to explore and experiment with how to present the same music in two completely unique ways. The album presents more fully-realised versions of all ten pieces, recorded and produced with the team at Imaginary Road Studios in Vermont and many of Fiona’s favorite instrumentalists; some recording was also done at Crash Symphony Productions in Sydney.

“One of the brightest lights in the contemporary instrumental genre,

Fiona Joy Hawkins is poised to move into stardom and we have only to watch to see it happen”

– Will Ackerman (Founder Windham Hill Records)

The Violent Femmes – We Can Do Anything

"The Violent Femmes – We Can Do Anything"

Violent Femmes’ ninth studio album and first full-length collection in more than 15 years, We Can Do Anything is among the most provocative and playful in the legendary band’s remarkable canon featuring a wealth of recently penned tunes.  As the title makes plain, founding Femmes Gano and Brian Ritchie (acoustic bass guitar, vocals) remain intrepid as ever before, traversing infinite genre and emotion via their immediately identifiable mash of rambunctious folk, minimalist punk, cubist blues, cosmic jazz, and back porch rock ‘n’ roll.

“What the Femmes are,” says Ritchie, “and I think we always have been, is a repository for American roots music. Most people think of us as a kind of rock band but we’re a lot more than that and I think this album represents all that in a really natural, cohesive way. It just flows smoothly between all these ideas.”

Hussy Hicks – Lucky Joe’s Wine

"Hussy Hicks – Lucky Joe’s Wine"

The Hussy Hicks have a unique musical approach that spans many genres – from boisterous blues and roots, to contemporary folk fortified with delicious vocal harmonies; alt country inspired comedic tales from the road to 80’s style power ballads. The girls, Julz Parker and Leesa Gentz are highly regarded for their musicality by their fellow musicians and punters alike, you can expect lots of interactive jamming, killer guitar licks and soaring vocals. This approach has seen them on stage in Jams with everyone from Michael Franti and Edward Sharp (Alex Ebert) to John Butler and the Indigo Girls.

The band had spent a few weeks at the magical Muscle Shoals Sound Studios recording ‘Raise the Deal’ by Kristy Lee and were keen to get back to Alabama to cut some Hussy Hicks tracks. Hall of Fame legend Rick Hirsch (Wet Willy, Cher, Greg Allman, Joan Armatrading) played host to the Hussy Hicks in his Alabama studio, where they gathered a few musician friends to collaborate on a seven-track mini album.
‘Lucky Joe’s Wine and Other Tales From Dog River’ is a completely new direction for the Australian-based duo, seeing an evolution of sound from NCEIA Album of the Year ‘The London Sessions’ to a more alt country, southern feel.

The country focus will be no surprise to Hussy Hicks’ long-time fans. Leesa Gentz grew up in the Australian country scene, signing to ABC records at just 16 years old. As always, the Hussies’ music is a melting pot of influences and on this track you hear not just Leesa’s country roots but also a pull towards the surf instrumental vibes from Julz’s time with the Phil Emmanuel band.

Mark Lucas – Continental Drift

"Mark Lucas – Continental Drift"

Hard on the heels of his recent solo outing “Little Town Blues”, local troubadour Mark Lucas is back with a new offering from his stalwart band, The Dead Setters.

Originally from the UK, Mark spins tales of the ordinary and beyond armed with a dry wit and a well-travelled if world-weary take on the human condition. Add Jake Lardot (Belgium) album producer & one of Australia’s most respected guitar players (check 14 years on the road with Lee Kernaghan), John Lee (Georgia, USA) fiddle & mandolin, Steve Gunning (all over the place via Woodford) drums (former sideman to Vicky O’Keefe, Grace Knight amongst others), and Chris Mearns (the not-so-token Australian) bass, who’s been plying his trade longer than most have a right to, and you’ve got a multicultural take on country roots music, embracing folk, country and blues with a foot in the past and ear to the future.

‘The Continental Drift’, the band’s fifth release offers gritty observations on life and love driven by a bunch of musicians schooled in everything from punk to bluegrass, but all with a taste for tale well told and a melody that hooks you in.

“The recipe seems pretty simple: creeping easy on the ear melodies, songs written with ingredients from the store where Tom Petty and Elliott Murphy shop, a voice which is very akin to that of Gerry Rafferty, guitar sounds emerging from the strings of Bonnie Raitt … well, enough parts to make the great record that this CD has become.”

File under adult alternative Australian roots music.

twelvefour is lush and intimate: think drum machines, dirtier guitars mixed with soulful, smooth synth moments. Plentiful late night vibes.

Suze DeMarchi – HOME

"Suze DeMarchi – HOME"

‘Home’ by Suze DeMarchi features duets with Jimmy Barnes, Russell Morris, Diesel, Tex Perkins and Dallas Frasca.
Marking exactly fifteen years since the enigmatic singer’s first solo album, the new studio offering is a collection of familiar songs about home, originally recorded by a diverse set of artists including The Clash, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sheryl Crow, Adele, Ryan Adams and more.
These are the songs that have been close to Suze’s heart on her journey around the world and back home to Australia.
“Home was always on my mind. I’ve always been drawn to stories about home, and love many songs about home that resonate with me now as much as they did during the years I was away. To celebrate my journey I’ve recorded an album of these songs, with some friends, and with those I admire.”

A slight departure from her rock roots with the Baby Animals, and with the unlikely and ultimately perfect pairing of Shane Nicholson on production, ‘Home’ is delivered with the same passion that has earned Suze DeMarchi her iconic status in the Australian music history books.
“Home is where my roots lie, where my folks are, where my history remains, where the air is sweet, where my friends reside and where I kiss the ground when I step off that plane.”
