Best known as Charlotte Gainsbourg’s sister and Jane Birkin’s daughter, Doillon emerged as a star in her own right when her debut album, ‘Places’, won Best Female Artist at the French Grammies. With titles such as I.C.U and Same Old Game, the album teases at themes such as betrayal, unrequited love and finding yourself.

Kate Ceberano -Kensal Road (Espresso Service)

"Kate Ceberano -Kensal Road (Espresso Service)"
Kate Ceberano
‘Kensal Road’ (Sony Music)

Kensal Road is a collection of the first recordings of original material from celebrated Australian artist Kate Ceberano in ten years.

During this time, Kate has dedicated herself to her role as mother, ambassador, for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Berlei, and numerous successful artistic ventures that include recording cover albums, roles on TV, theatre, and work as Artistic Director for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, resulting in record-breaking ticket sales this year.

Ultimately, Kat Ceberano is an esteemed singer/songwriter and it is to this arena she returns with ‘Kensal Road’

Musically, ‘Kensal Road’ echoes Kate’s early musical influences of Hawaiian folk music and Fleetwood Mac, but equally the music reflects the very current sounds of the nu-folk and nu-country movement, reflected in such singer/songwriters like Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling

Junip – Junip (Espresso Release)

"Junip – Junip (Espresso Release)"

Sweden’s critically acclaimed Junip are set to release their eponymous, self- titled sophomore album on April 26, 2013 via Shock Records.

Formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1998 and fronted by inimitable singer- songwriter, José González, Junip the album has been a long time coming.

Rounded out by drummer Elias Araya and keyboardist Tobias Winterkorn, Junip was recorded and self-produced by the trio and Don Alsterberg (Soundtrack of Our Lives, International Noise Conspiracy).

Junip comprises ten tracks of existential crisis that González describes as being “…about growing up and taking responsibility in that moment when all of a sudden your life changes, you’re in a new situation…your ideals are challenged and you have to think things through from a new angle.”

The attitude and mood of the album is expressed at the outset with opener, Line of Fire. Melding melody with motoric repetition while building to a

dramatic, symphonic climax, González asks, “What would you say/ If you had to leave today/ Leave everything behind/ Even though, for once, you’re shining?”

Current single, Your Life, Your Call, straddles the divide between melancholic sentiment and infectious drum-machine handclaps and exuberant singsong chorus. The song is a tightrope act that González himself took time to adjust to. “I felt like trying on new clothes when we first listened to it – it took a while to get comfortable with it…” he says.

Junip, for all its brooding darkness and melodrama, is ultimately about redemption. As González explains, “…the grass will grow after snow melts away: finding that hopeful feeling between the lines, that’s what the whole record is about.”

Chance Waters – Infinity (Espresso Release)

"Chance Waters – Infinity (Espresso Release)"

Chance Waters (formerly Phatchance) has ditched the moniker and burst onto the Australian music scene with the first single from his new record Infinity, ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ receiving high rotation on triple j over the last few months. Now Chance Waters has come back swinging with ‘Young & Dumb’, the under-your-skin-catchy follow up single featuring enchanting Australian songstress, Bertie Blackman.

Infinity is a mature, intelligent and ambitious record which impressively fuses thought provoking subject matter with musical elements from a wide array of genres, underpinned with a charmingly accessible pop-aesthetic. The album, as its title and intricate artwork hints, is a challengingly existential collection of songs. Chance is equally in his element questioning the fabric of reality (Infinity), joking about the end of days (Maybe Tomorrow) and confronting personal demons (Feel Alright) – but above all Infinity is a record which demonstrates the depth of detail and passion that sets Chance’s writing apart.

The bulk of the production on the album is handled by recent hit machine One Above (Hilltop Hoods – I Love It/Illy – Heard It All) and textured with contributions from dozens of musicians, guest producers and feature artists. Equally as comfortable singing harmonies and choruses as he is rapping verses, Chance effortlessly transitions between styles many of his contemporaries would be afraid to touch and operates as a song writer in a way that’s uncommon for his genre.

Simply put Infinity is one of the most movingly written albums to emerge from the local hip-hop scene and a perfect demonstration of why the buzz around Chance Waters is building so quickly.

Pete Murray – Blue Sky Blue – The Byron Sessions 2013 (Espresso Release)

"Pete Murray – Blue Sky Blue – The Byron Sessions 2013 (Espresso Release)"

Pete Murray’s new compendium album, Blue Sky Blue “The Byron Sessions” celebrates the collaborative Byron lifestyle and includes contributions from some very special guest artists. The idea spawned out of jamming on each other’s songs within this tight knit kinship.

After living with his most recent studio album Blue Sky Blue, Pete wanted to re-record and release the album how he plays it with his friends – stripped back, Byron-style. Pete put the word out to a collection of his muso mates to contribute on this compendium album. Byron locals Ash Grunwald and Scott Owen (The Living End) lend slide guitar and bass respectively to make Hurricane Coming unmistakably coastal; Katie Noonan’s vocals on Hold It All For Love are beautifully haunting; new kid on the block Fantine takes Pete into uncharted territory on lead track Blue Sky Blue with a rap written by indigenous roots queen Natalie Pa’apa’a (Blue King Brown); another Byron local Bernard Fanning takes time out of his busy recording schedule to sing backing vocals on Led; Busby Marou contributes vocal harmonies and guitar on Let You Go and the track Free and Darren Middleton (Powderfinger) plays his recognisable guitar licks on H.O.L.L.A.N.D.
