The Mezcaltones Feature Album Mexican Hillbilly Surf Music

"The Mezcaltones Feature Album Mexican Hillbilly Surf Music"

The Mezcaltones Mexican Hillbilly Surf Music
The band’s third album finds them at the top of their game with brilliantly written and played originals along with a tasteful selection of covers lifted from their live set. Recorded and mixed in just over a week at Damien Gerard’s new expanded studios on the Central Coast, the album stands as their most cohesively accessible and sonically pleasing to date.

Only released last Friday to coincide with the launch on Sydney’s Northern Beaches to their home crowd, the Album is already garnering reviews such as:
The third album from the enigmatic Mezcaltones is cranking, feelgood drinking music that crawls into your boots and drags you to the dance floor of any number of dusty roadside Mexican Saloons.” Redback Rock
“The good, the bad, the groovy, playing all things cool with a Tarantino and strong Mexican flavourBlog

The band have also been invited to co host Ross Fear’s influential Australian Spectrum show this Tuesday March 3.

The band will be playing over the next few weeks to promote the record, see dates below.

And now to the band – Just what is it about the Mezcaltones –
Four guys dressed as cowboys and two women dressed like Spanish Mexican Senoritas that you might find in a Quentin Tarantino movie – two guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, a crazy front man and a beautiful dancer/percussionist. Whilst their original songs have an alt country flavour with rich cowboy guitar sounds reminiscent of another century, the guitar tones also reach into the realms of 60’s surf instrumentals.

Music review of the album ‘Raw’ by ELDAFYRE

Author: Adam Paul Jones

Lie back in bed with quality headphones wrapped around your head and escape into a meditative state with the grooves from ELDAFYRE’s ‘Raw’, an opus of 7 expansive modern jazz masterpieces. Mind you, I’d have this album, an indulgence for your ears and mind, blasting out of loudspeakers whilst spring cleaning the house!

38 year-old Mark, who hails from the central Victorian country town of Shepparton, and now more likely calls Byron Bay his spiritual home, is ELDAFYRE, with those dreamy and nasally new folky vocal tones reminiscent of Boy and Bear. This is a very fine album featuring sultry saxophones and trumpeting horns, that blend effortlessly with stereophonic keyboards, complimentary guitars and a beautiful dark rhythm section, topping off this modern catchy jazz-rock-funk outing.

Imagine if an old creative Melbourne songwriter with jazz, blues and folk influences met Steely Dan and Patti Smith’s love-child, well, they would give birth to ELDAFYRE, and this ‘Raw’ album that opens quite naturally with ‘Welcome Around’ – getting that bass guitar popping with some twangy guitar and smooth trumpet before we are introduced to ‘why don’t you come inside?’, an invitation few could refuse, with that voice! As this song progresses I want to get up and dance with my special one and celebrate our love.

We can have ‘Another Wholesome Night’ with what now sounds like Rikki Lee Jones’ backing band, and yes mate, we will “be so kind to see it through”. As we keep dancing, ‘The Evening Came Together’ and we stopped to marvel at the conversation going on between Mr. Trumpet, Mr. Sax and Mr Keyboards. This is ‘Where Connection Bonds’ and we swing together like willows swaying in a warm breeze.

There is so much more to come, including some rock electric chords playing with a sax in ‘Phat Lines Down’, then we are treated to a ‘Long Pause’ (which is anything but), before ending appropriately with yet another work of art, ‘A Last Goodbye’.

Listen up lovers of fine music, do yourself an ELDAFYRE favour….

Describing himself as a ‘Sylist Acoustic Poet’ and with his new album of Dark Smokey Jazz NoirRAW” featured on soundslikecafe we managed to get him sitting on the couch and asked some in depth questions of this aspiring new artist –

  1. Tell us about the moment you decided to become a singer/writer/artist/musician? What did your family/friends have to say about it?

When I was very young I watched ‘the little shop of horrors’ and ‘the lion king’. I got my hands on the soundtrack and used to sing it over and over. The first time anyone becomes a singer is when they first start to sing. For me it was these songs to the walls of an old bungalow in Shepparton. Near the showgrounds. Down a street called Williams rd. My families way of support was to call me names and force me as far away from them as possible.  Then I found myself locked in the car so they couldn’t stop me from singing. They call it hard love.

  1. Who are your early influences?

Brian Transeau. Patti smith. Rodriguez. Melanie Safka. John Butler Trio. Jeff Buckley. Xavier Rudd.

  1. Tell us a little about your writing process, how does a song come along? What gets you going creatively?

Being alone. Where nobody can possibly here a word I’m singing. This happens in quiet spaces with just me and my guitar. Being together in the moment. Finding a ‘jam night’ and making up music in the heat of the moment. Being surrounded by a dancing crowd. I create many unheard songs this way. People tell me I look possessed. I literally have no concept of space and time. When I come out of the creative coma its like I am born again. The song is always complete the first time. If it doesn’t complete itself.. then it gets thrown away.

  1. What is the first record you bought and why?

Offspring – Smash.  It made me jump around the room and forget about school.

  1. What current/new Artists/Bands inspire you and why?

Brian Transeau. True music lovers have an artist they resonate with the most. ‘Movement in still life’ Was a transitional album for my life. Every-time I listen to that album I am transported to walking Melbourne streets. I treasure it. Its my life and blood. Ill never love an album more.

  1. Tell us a little about what a crowd can expect at a live show?

Currently I do only live acoustic poetry sessions at some pretty cool restaurants and cafes. Some magical festivals. Expect music therapy. Expect to be relaxed. Expect to forget about your worries. Most report a deep sense of healing and restoration after my performances.

Adam Jones Releases Third Album ‘The Dark Side Of The Earth’

"Adam Jones Releases Third Album ‘The Dark Side Of The Earth’"

Melbourne folk-rock, alt-country and blues singer/songwriter/musician Adam Jones releases his third album The Dark Side Of The Earth on 27 September 2019.

Adam released an album of 12 diverse songs in 2017 called ‘Little Death’, and then an acoustic version of that album a year later. His catchy and interesting songs traverse many styles such as folk-rock, blues, alt-country and Australiana.

In November 2018 Adam started recording some new material at a local studio in Flowerdale, Victoria and those sessions finally wrapped up at the end of August. Two early singles from these sessions – ‘Cupid’ and ‘Shining Car’ – were well-received by radio, social media and local fans.

Adam Jones studio scene

Adam explains his inspiration for the album title. “I wrote a song called The Dark Side of The Earth, protesting about, and expressing my sadness, with regard to how cruel humans can be. Later when it came to planning the album, I thought that it would make a great album title, especially as my favourite album of all time is Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of The Moon! All songs on the album relate somehow to what I call ‘the dark side of humanity!”

Folk-rock album opener No Insurance examines risk in personal relationships, Knots in Our Hair is musically a nod to country artist John Prine whilst lyrically reflecting on the love, freedom and happiness that a relationship can provide.
The title track acts as a socio-political protest song, which Jones hopes will encourage listeners to “get up and make a real difference.”

Adam Jones guitar in studio

Adam has been a serious music fan since he was very young. “My older brother left home when I was 10 and left behind his vinyl collection, my favourites including The Beatles, Neil Young and Led Zeppelin. I remember the first CD I bought was Dire Straits Brothers In Arms when CDs had only just become available in Australia.  I loved the rock, blues and sweet melodies of Dire Straits music. Other early influences were some of the classics of 60’s and 70’s rock and folk, like Bob Dylan, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. More recent music that inspires Adam are Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine “for their creativity and musicality.”

Although music has been a huge part of his life since then, it’s only in the last couple of years that he’s put some serious energy into his music. “I’ve been singing, writing songs, playing guitar, a bit of keyboard and percussion since I was a child. I decided to become a serious recording and performing artist late in life after a long-term relationship broke down in early 2017.”

Adam is an extremely prolific songwriter. “I write a lot, up to 150 songs per year – complete as far as lyrics and basic guitar parts go,” he explains. “I usually write the lyrics first and then straight away put some music to them and then finish the song and decide on the structure, rhythm, tempo, etc. Having time alone to sit and focus on my thoughts, experiences and feelings usually leads to me being creative. Sometimes I plan to write a particular song, others are very spontaneous. I try and change up what I write about a lot so that there is plenty of variety in my songs.”

Adam Jones – The Dark Side Of The Earth is out September 20 through Foghorn Records / MGM Distribution.

Carlyle Christopherson – Follow Me

"Carlyle Christopherson – Follow Me"

Carlyle Christopherson is an Australian musician, originally from central Victoria, who now resides in Switzerland.

CALYLE-23

His remarkable journey from the corporate world to following his dreams as a musician and a lover of acoustic rock has seen him reconnect with his passion for music and performance.

His debut single Follow Me offers a definite Australian acoustic-rock flavour in his sparse instrumentation and storytelling lyric about hope and aspiration as we navigate through life’s great big journey.

It comes from his debut album, Here Comes History, which was produced and co-written alongside Things Of Stone And Wood frontman Greg Arnold. It is an album possessing a remarkable collection of fables, echoing Christopherson’s journey against some challenging yet eventually rewarding personal odds.

Carlyle’s love for Australian music is clear with influences including artists such as Paul Dempsey, Bernard Fanning, Paul Kelly, Olympia and Greg Arnold.
“I’ve loved working on the album, says Greg Arnold. “Carlyle has such a soulful and reflective lyrical perspective and his voice and songs are deeply evocative of an authentic 70s singer-songwriter.”
‘Here Comes History’ is out NOW.

UPCOMING SHOW DATES ARE:

Following a highly successful launch at Marrickville Bowlo last weekend the next time to catch the lads will be  –

Sunday August 25 @ Smith’s Alternative, Canberra

Big Merino is a genre-busting band featuring Stuart Davis (lead vocals/guitar), Alex Craig (lead guitar), Peter Richardson (bass) and Colin Sevitt (drums).

Their songs blur the lines between rock, country, blues, soul and pop.  Despite an obvious passion for Americana (blues, country and Gospel) their music somehow also sounds quintessentially Australian, shaped by our landscape and their own stories.

“Great songs, great songwriting and best of all – full of a real sincerity and commitment”

Michael Smith – Rhythms

The album will be released on July 27 on Foghorn Records through MGM.
